The Prosecuting Attorney represents the State of Ohio by inquiring into and prosecuting felony crimes committed by adults and all offenses committed by juveniles. This division is most commonly associated with a Prosecutor's Office and utilizes a team of attorneys who work hard to uphold the law and protect the citizens of Erie County and seek punishment for offenders of crimes.
In 2008, there were 616 persons indicted for crimes by the Erie County Grand Jury, which set a record. Perspectively, in 1989, the first year Kevin J. Baxter served as Prosecuting Attorney, there were only 222 cases indicted. (A substantial number of these cases in 2004 were generated by the Erie County Drug Task Force, an organization operated under the direction of the Prosecuting Attorney's Office.)
Another important component of the Erie County Prosecuting Attorney's office is the victim/witness division. Last year this program served more than 1,706 victims of crime whose cases appeared in six different courts in Erie County.
