Wildlife And Crop Damage

Pear damage from squirrels

Wildlife management is a science, though not an exact science, and seldom stays the same, most due to limiting factors, i.e. weather, disease, and habitat loss. Whenever populations increase there is a risk of human-wildlife conflict, especially where crops are concerned. This could be everything from the traditional corn-beans-wheat-truck vegetables to orchards and tree farms.

Raccoon damage

No method of nuisance control is "fool proof", however there are measures that a landowner can take to minimize crop and property destruction. The first step is to accurately identify the cause, whether deer, raccoon, birds, or other species of wildlife.

For technical assistance landowners can contact their county Wildlife Officer or their local SWCD Wildlife Specialist.

There are three Wildlife Specialist's located in the Lake Erie region:

  • Joe Uhink, Ottawa SWCD, 419-898-6431
  • Ann Keefe, Seneca SWCD, 419-447-7073
  • Tim White, Erie SWCD, 419-626-5211
