The Clerk of the Board is responsible for setting the Board’s agendas, scheduling public hearings and bid openings, and recording all actions of the Board, which are then preserved as permanent records in the Commissioners’ journals. The Clerk also directs records retention and microfilming activities. The Clerk of the Board receives administrative supervision from the Erie County Administrator.

In 2008, over 572 resolutions were adopted, ranging in scope from providing for the day-to-day operation, services, and maintenance of County facilities, to the improvement and construction of bridges, ditches, sewer and water lines; road vacations; working with state and federal legislators to bring a regional airport to Erie County in conjunction with expansion at NASA Plumbrook; capitalizing on the use of energy generated at the landfill; setting County policies; submitting grant applications for victims assistance, drug court, criminal justice, mental health, home rehabilitation, and job training; the promotion of tourism and economic development; and the purchase and sale of sewer services and water for County residents.

The Clerk, along with other employees in this office, are affiliated with professional organizations that provide networking opportunities and continuing education, including Leadership Erie County, the County Archivists and Records Managers Association (CARMA) and serving on the Executive Board of the County Commissioners’ Clerks and Engineers’ Secretaries Association of Ohio (CCC/ESAO).

Microfilm Department

The Microfilm Department, operating as part of the Clerk’s Office and working closely with the Ohio Historical Society and the Center for Archival Collections of Bowling Green State University, manages records retention for the County’s elected officials and those departments under the umbrella of the County Commissioners. Documents are prepared, filmed, and processed, and the security film is stored within this department, creating permanent archival records. The filmed documents are then disposed of according to regulations.

During 2008, over 402,000 documents were filmed in this office, and nearly 1,100 cubic feet of records were disposed of in compliance with Ohio Historical Society standards.

The County switchboard is also located in this department, providing general information to citizens regarding most departments, boards and activities throughout the entire County, and maintaining the operation of over 700 phone lines serving County offices.
